Jarun, Bundek and the Sava: Zagreb’s summer playground
The back story

About Jarun, Bundek and the Sava: Zagreb’s summer playground
When summer arrives, Zagreb heads south, to the lakes and embankments along the Sava: Lake Jarun for swimming, rowing and nightlife, Bundek for picnics and family days, and long riverside paths for cycling.
Lake Jarun
Jarun was shaped for the 1987 Summer Universiade, the student Olympics, when Zagreb built a rowing course beside the Sava. Today its pebble beaches fill on hot days, rowers train on the long course, and paths around the lake are busy with cyclists, runners and skaters.
Bundek
Across the river in Novi Zagreb, Bundek was transformed into a landscaped park around a lake, with lawns, playgrounds and summer events, a favourite with families.
Zagreb has no sea, so it made itself lakes.
Cycling the Sava
Long, flat paths along the Sava embankments link the lakes and make easy cycling, with the river on one side and the city on the other.

Our advice: on a hot day, take a tram to Jarun, swim from the pebble beaches and stay for a drink at sunset. Cyclists can ride the embankments from Jarun to Bundek.
