The back story

About Zagreb after dark

Zagreb’s nightlife is relaxed, friendly and more about music and conversation than velvet ropes. Evenings start on the café terraces, move on to bars, and end at a concert or club, often in a former factory.

Evenings on Tkalčićeva

Most nights start on Tkalčićeva, the long street of café-bars below the Upper Town, and on the streets around Flower Square, where terraces stay busy late into the evening, especially in the warmer months.

Live music

Zagreb loves live music. Small clubs host jazz, blues and rock most nights, while bigger venues such as Tvornica Kulture, in a former factory, stage international bands. Student clubs such as KSET offer concerts and DJ nights at friendly prices.

In Zagreb, a night out begins with coffee and ends with a band.

The alternative scene

Močvara, on the Sava, and Medika, in a former pharmaceutical factory, are the heart of the city’s alternative scene, with concerts, club nights and art.

Summer on the lake

In summer, the action moves to Lake Jarun, where clubs and bars by the water stay open late and the evenings are warm. Many venues close or slow down in July and August, when locals head to the coast.

Our advice: start with a drink on Tkalčićeva, catch a band at a small club, and on a summer weekend take a taxi to Jarun. Check each venue’s programme before you go, as many open only on certain nights.
