The Substructures
Beneath the palace

About The Substructures
Beneath the emperor’s apartments, the vaulted halls of the substructures were built to raise the palace above the sloping ground. Because they mirror the rooms above, they show how Diocletian’s residence was laid out. The central hall leads from the Riva to the Peristyle and is lined with stalls.
