East to Serbia

The motorway runs east from Zagreb across the Slavonian plain to the Serbian border, and coaches cover the route several times a day, the fastest in about five and a half hours (FlixBus, October 2026). Air Serbia flies direct in a little over an hour. Although the two capitals share a main railway line, no through passenger train runs between them in the current timetables. Serbia is outside the EU and Schengen, so expect passport checks at the border. Belgrade, where the Sava meets the Danube below the Kalemegdan fortress, is a lively capital of galleries, concert halls and river clubs. Our sister guide, the ULTIMATE Belgrade City Guide, covers it in depth.
